In this part of the country it is common to see garden statues and yard art such as deer, geese, rabbits, and such. On the large ranches, one might see a very large bull or life-size horse. Why not a gorilla? Just outside of Lubbock Texas near Ida Lou, there sits a gorilla statue out in a field off the road a ways. There is nothing else out there except maybe for some grazing cows. It has always been rather strange as I drive by so see such a thing in the middle of the Texas Panhandle.

Ida Lou isn’t alone. While driving to Lawton over the weekend to explore the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, we took highway 70 westbound out of Argyle. Sitting on a little mound of rock and dirt situated in front of a small business is another of these life size gorilla statues. My husband insisted we get a shot of these for the purpose of this story.

The first photo is of the Lone Grove, Oklahoma gorilla. The second: Ida Lou Texas gorilla.

Someone thought them worth the time, effort, and expense to set them out for display.
