Gene Autry, OK

Yesterday we took a little drive through Oklahoma. Our plans were changed once we discovered there was a water shortage at Turner Falls. We left and drove for a while ending up in towns I’ll talk about later. Without any sort of plans, we hopped on the 177 southbound and drove to Gene Autry.

Three churches are found in this Oklahoma community–two Baptist, one Methodist. The population of Gene Autry is about a hundred. As you can see in the above photo this church isn’t that small of one. Neither is the Methodist church down and around the corner. This church is across the street from the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum that closes at 4 pm and not 5. We arrived at 3:55 pm thinking we just might have an hour to see the large museum for the last hour of the day. Unfortunately, the sign on the door indicated otherwise.

When a celebrity shows up in town and moves into the neighborhood, it is likely enough to get the town’s name changed. That is what happened right here in Berwyn, OK. Gene Autry showed up and called it home. The name was changed in 1939 1941.

In September, the annual Film and Music Festival will be held the 23-27. Plan your trip now!

1939? was Gene Autry already a star then? I moved to San Diego in 1956 and there were horses kept in fields near by and I was told Gene Autry kept one of his there. That field is now covered in cement, asphalt, and a shopping mall…..

Westy, I made a mistake. The name was changed to 1941.
